January

New Year

New Year on the Cote d’Azur is generally celebrated with plenty of good food and drink in restaurants and bars. Some towns, such as Cannes and Monaco put on festive firework displays to welcome in the New Year.

Nice Prom Classic

This annual 10km run along the scenic Promenade des Anglais in Nice is the perfect way to kick start the year and stick to those New Year’s resolutions!

Carnival de Nice

Nice’s famous carnival attracts visitors from across the region and beyound. It takes place over three weeks, with the festivities starting in mid-February. Processions, dancing, music and more, parade through the streets of the city and delight tourists and locals alike. Be prepared for flowers, confetti, well worth a visit.

Fete des Citrons

Visitors to the Cote d’Aur, often make a stop in Menton for the annual ‘Fete des Citrons’. Menton is famous for its citrus fruit, which thrives in the city’s wonderful and unique micro-climate. During the Fete des Citrons, impressive sculptures of oranges and lemons are on display throughout the city and visitors line the streets to enjoy the festive atmosphere at the parades.

Cannes Film Festival
One of the world’s most celebrated film festivals, Cannes rolls out the red carpet for two weeks in May for international celebrities and film makers. Cannes is a hive of activity during the festival with TV programmes and news channels also based on the Croisette to catch all of the action.

Monaco Grand Prix

The biggest event in Monaco’s highly charged social calendar. Formula 1 stars and aficionados hit the streets of Monte Carlo for this legendary and utterly unique sporting event.

Ironman

Held annually on the last weekend of June, the Ironman event attracts a big crowd to cheer on the athletes in their grueling challenge to complete a 2.4 mile swim 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon under the sun on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

July

Bastille Day

The 14th July is France’s Fête National and a public holiday. After a relaxing day off work, join the locals for a fireworks display in most towns and villages. Nice and Cannes put on a particularly good shows, but the nearby village of Valbonne has a lively live band with dancing in the square that continues into the small hours of the morning.

Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique

Fireworks are celebrated annually in Cannes with the Pyrotechnical Festival taking place over several weeks. Each week brings a new display from a different competing country.

Nice Jazz Festival

Held in Nice since 1948 and often featuring an array of international artists. The festival now takes place in the open-air theatre in the heart of central Nice – The Théâtre de Verdure.

Jazz à Juan

Iconic jazz festival that really put Juan-les-Pins on the map, Jazz à Juan is a major highlight of the French Riviera’s musical calendar. Set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, it’s a magical way to spend an evening. Book your tickets well in advance!

Prom Party

The Promenade is closed off and becomes the site of a summer street party. Live music and big crowds make the most of the warm summer evenings and lively atmosphere.

Halloween

Not traditionally celebrated in France, however more and more restaurants and bars are joining in the celebrations, with fancy dress. The nearby village of Valbonne is particularly vibrant with dozens of children and adults in fancy dress.

The region’s principal marathon takes place annually in November. Setting off on the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice, the runners follow the coastline, crossing the finish line on the Croisette in Cannes.

Christmas Markets

The Christmas festivities begin early December with the turning on of the Christmas lights and the opening of the Christmas markets in Cannes, Nice and Monaco, together with other local markets in neighbouring villages. Enjoy the atmosphere with some roasted chestnuts and mulled wine or have a go at ice skating on Place Massena in Nice or the ice ring over the outdoor pool in Monaco.
